Property Description

Dorsey Cottage – Secluded Waterfront Escape on Eggemoggin Reach

Tucked away on a quiet semi-tidal cove, Dorsey Cottage offers a rare kind of coastal tranquility. Surrounded by water on two sides and set well back from the road, this two-bedroom, two-bath home offers peaceful seclusion, sweeping scenery, and direct access to one of Maine’s most beloved waterways — Eggemoggin Reach.

The cottage overlooks the shoreline with wide-open views across the cove and out to the reach. A large lawn stretches out in front, leading to a peaceful pasture, while water sparkles through the trees just steps from the back deck. Swing from the old tree swing, read a book in the Adirondack chairs, or watch the tide roll in, this property invites you to slow down and simply enjoy.

Simple Comforts, Big Views

The interior of the home is modest and relaxed, with an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area that’s filled with natural light. A large wall of windows and sliding glass doors look directly out to the water, and a beautiful, large fireplace anchors the living space. The kitchen is well equipped and flows easily into the dining area, which is set beside large windows offering picture-perfect views with every meal.

The downstairs bedroom has a queen bed and its own full bath, along with direct access to the back deck. Upstairs, you’ll find a second bedroom with a full bed and another private bathroom. A fold-down futon in the living room allows for additional sleeping space. Both a covered front porch and an open back deck with seating give you options to enjoy the outdoors in all weather.

A Private Cove for Kids and Adults Alike

Dorsey Cottage is perfectly suited for families, couples, or small groups looking to recharge in nature. The shoreline is a kid’s dream — full of hidden nooks to explore at low tide — while adults will love the privacy, the ever-changing light on the water, and the incredible sense of stillness. A washer and dryer, satellite TV, DVD player, and basic connectivity are included for convenience, though most guests find themselves drawn to the views instead of the screen.

Eggemoggin Reach: A Timeless Coastal Waterway

Eggemoggin Reach is considered one of the most iconic and scenic stretches of water in Maine. This mile-wide tidal passage separates Deer Isle from the mainland and is loved by sailors, kayakers, and coastal travelers alike. Known for its calm waters, sweeping views, and graceful Deer Isle Bridge, the Reach is also home to the annual Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, a celebrated wooden boat race that draws enthusiasts from around the world.

Testimonials

A true coastal gem, unforgettable

May 9, 2025

Dorsey Cottage was the highlight of our Maine road trip. We’d never been to Little Deer Isle before and didn’t know to much about the area, but as we got closer and turned into the long drive and saw the water through the trees, we knew we’d found our spot. The setting is unbeatable with total privacy, a huge lawn for our kids to run around, and the kind of peaceful cove that really feels like you have your own private harbor.

The inside of the cottage was clean, comfortable, and just as shown. Nothing fancy, but everything worked well, plenty of hot water, a big fridge, and a nice kitchen. The deck was our favorite hangout spot. We watched the tides come and go, spotted seals out in the distance, and even grilled dinner one night as the sky changed wild colors. It was deeply relaxing being right on the water like that. And Eggemoggin Reach was one of the most beautiful places we’ve seen on the coast.

We drove into Brooklin one day to check out the WoodenBoat School and spent another afternoon hiking a preserve on Deer Isle. We left feeling rested and grateful.

Magical Maine stay. Peaceful, private, and full of wonder.

October 1, 2024

We stayed at Dorsey Cottage for a week in early fall, and I can honestly say it was one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever experienced. The setting is incredible, the cove wraps around the cottage, and every time I looked up, the light on the water seemed to change. We spent hours on the back deck just listening to the breeze and watching the tide come in. One morning, we saw an eagle fly right over the lawn. Another day we launched the kayaks at high tide and paddled out toward Eggemoggin Reach. The water was so calm and the views just fabulous.

The house itself has such a relaxed vibe, which we loved. It’s not overly polished, but it felt real and welcoming, like a true Maine retreat. The fireplace made chilly nights extra cozy, and the general layout was perfect for our group. My husband and I took the downstairs bedroom with direct access to the deck, and our friend stayed upstairs and enjoyed her own space and bathroom.

We made a couple of short trips, one to Stonington for lunch and another to walk the shore at Reach Beach nearby, but mainly we were happiest just staying put. This place has a kind of quiet charm to it that’s hard to describe.

Dorsey Cottage - On a quiet cove

July 19, 2023

Lovely cottage in a beautiful natural setting. Visitors included foxes, deer and a pair of blue herons. Beautiful view…very private and relaxing spot.

Perfect Retreat!

Looking forward to renting next year. Only one recommendation- install stair railing to second floor. We are still mobile and healthy but a hand rail on stairs is a simple safety assist for all ages. Cheers

Perfect Get-A-Way

May 25, 2022

Dorsey Cottage was perfect in so many ways. Location was excellent, loved a glass of wine on the deck. What a view, that included sunrises and sunsets. Roomy for four people, yet cozy. Most certainly is a vacation spot, I would recommend.

Unbeatable views!

May 10, 2022

Amazing, incredible views of the bay and a little cove! We spent quite a bit of time watching the tide go in and out of the cove throughout the day and the birds hanging out on the sandbar! Very quiet area and cottage was clean and in good condition. Lots of local books to look at in the cottage. Beds were comfortable, but I wish there was a dresser or cabinet to put your clothes into!

Tranquil Getaway

February 23, 2022

We had the most wonderful time at Dorsey Cottage. The weather was far from perfect, yet it still was such a beautiful setting. The view from the living room is so lovely that even though we had a few days of rain, the setting made it so you didn’t feel the need to venture out.

A perfect country coveside cottage

December 31, 2021

A little out of the way, but with a nice view of the tides. We loved the fireplace, tea, and the board games. The whole house, especially the kitchen was very well outfitted.

A Great place to call home.

Cute little house.

August 10, 2021

Gorgeous location, right on the reach with beautiful morning sun.

Relax at millpond

July 19, 2021

We enjoyed our week at Dorsey Cottage very much- perfect location to relax at the property, go swimming at high tide or for a walk at low tide.

Well equipped kitchen, comfortable living room with great views. Good location to explore Deer Island.

We would love to come back

Brooklin Magic

July 8, 2021

The property was given to me as an alternative to another property I had reserved that was overbooked. It was far better than the pictures present it as and a calm and private little slice of tranquility on the Eggemoggin Reach. Thank you for the wonderful stay.

Traditional Maine Getaway

June 24, 2021

Dorsey Cottage is what you imagine to be the old-school, traditional family vacation in Maine. Quiet, peaceful, isolated. It is an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. We could launch kayaks into the cove and bay within feet of the cottage, and we could walk for hours on the tidal flats at low tide. The views and cottage are better in person than in the listing pics.

Serenity

December 25, 2020

My stay way magical. I saw deer, fox, mischievous blue jays, I was scolded by grey and red squirrels, and three times was lucky enough to see a juvenile Bald Eagle follow the coast to the river and start his flight inland. I was able to rest and recharge and heal and contemplate.

You do feel very much alone – the only neighbors far enough away not to see through the copse. There are plenty of hunters around – so if you’re here in the fall be sure to bring your orange. And try not to sing at the top of your lungs. Apparently, it bothers the hunters – and to all of them – I apologize!

A truly magical vacation. Thank you for the gift of the stay.

Great quiet location

October 21, 2019

This was a perfect location for a quiet get away to enjoy the fall colors.
